Housing As A Health-Related Social Need: Lessons From North Carolina’s Healthy Opportunities Pilot

– Health Affairs

Manatt Health Partner Melinda Dutton and Directors Dori Glanz Reyneri and Mandy Ferguson wrote a Health Affairs article discussing lessons learned from North Carolina's experience leveraging Medicaid to address health-related social needs (HRSN) for beneficiaries experiencing housing crises.

In the article, the authors explored North Carolina’s experience leading the adoption of Medicaid to support HRSN for beneficiaries through its Healthy Opportunities Pilots program, highlighting lessons learned from the program to offer insights that can assist other states in the progression of their own HRSN policies. “Through its recent guidance supporting state efforts to meet patients’ health-related social needs, CMS has opened the door for states to innovate and fund creative solutions to some of the most pressing issues impacting Medicaid beneficiaries. As state approaches to addressing HRSNs continue to proliferate, the focus on housing-related services and their impact on health will be front and center,” the authors wrote.
