Joel Ario Talks to Inside Health Policy on Insurance Market Merging

"Majority Of State-Based Exchanges Likely To Keep Markets Separate"
Inside Health Policy

March 29, 2013 - Manatt's Joel Ario, a managing director with Manatt Health Solutions, spoke to Inside Health Policy about whether states will merge their small group and individual insurance markets.

Inside Health Policy reports that states had to let the CMS Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight know by March 29 if they plan to merge their small group and individual insurance markets. The vast majority of states are likely to keep the markets separate, at least for the first year. Industry sources told the publication that merging the two markets would create more complexities and potential market destabilization.

Very few states will be seeking to merge their markets, said Ario. He said the concept just does not make sense for most states.
