The Norman Transcript
March 26, 2010 – The Norman Transcript, a newspaper of Norman, Okla., reported on ManattJones Global Strategies CEO and Chairman James R. Jones’ lecture presentation that identified many of the challenges facing the nation. Jones, who is a former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and who once represented Oklahoma’s First Congressional District, was the guest lecturer at the bi-annual Josh Lee Lecture series at the University of Oklahoma on March 25, 2010.
In his lecture titled “If Our Government is Broken, How Do We Fix It?,” Jones discussed many of the nation’s problems, such as mounting debt, a faltering education system and reckless political gerrymandering. He pointed to the more recent partisan atmosphere in Washington, coupled with the “corrosive” power of money in politics, as being something that is crippling the country.
“Lyndon Johnson told his staff, after the election, ‘We are no longer Republicans or Democrats, we are Americans,’” Jones said. Nowadays, he said, bipartisanship is the norm.
