January 1, 2010 - The national Litigation Division of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, was recognized for “stellar results” in 2008 and 2009, with an Honorable Mention from The American Lawyer, in their fifth biennial Litigation Department of the Year issue.  The firm was one of only 24 to receive the designation in a competition that included the country’s largest 200 firms.

“Our Litigation Division, with nearly 150 lawyers and centered around a premier trial practice, has enjoyed some extraordinary victories for clients over the past several years,” said Chad Hummel, the Division’s Chair.  “And, this streak has continued since the publication looked at results in summer 2009.  Manatt litigators are doing great work, and we are gratified by The American Lawyer honor.”

The January 2010 issue notes that Manatt won the largest jury verdict of 2008 - more than $700 million for ICO Global Communications Holdings Limited in a breach of contract case against The Boeing Company.  Less than a month later, the firm also won $35 million for a class of more than 2,000 retired National Football League players in a landmark licensing suit against their union.

Renowned for cutting-edge litigation in healthcare, intellectual property, and entertainment, among areas, The American Lawyer mentions that Manatt “kept busy in a hot practice area with a plethora of false advertising cases.”

William T. Quicksilver, Manatt’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner, said that the mention was a “testament to the formidable litigation team the firm has assembled.  I congratulate them on this much-deserved honor.”
