Manatt Receives National Law Journal’s Pro Bono Award for Second Consecutive Year

“2010 Pro Bono Awards”
National Law Journal

January 4, 2010 – Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, was honored with a 2010 Pro Bono Award from the National Law Journal (NLJ) for the firm’s critical role in securing an unqualified victory in what had been a hard-fought, ongoing environmental battle to safeguard the rights and quality of life for residents of McCloud, California.  The multi-office effort was led by Manatt partners Stephan Mayne and Andrew Bassak.

The annual NLJ Pro Bono Award is given to law firms and lawyers “doing exemplary work upholding the principle that justice shouldn't be contingent on one's ability to pay.”  While three other law firms also earned NLJ Pro Bono Awards this year, Manatt’s recognition marks the first time in history that a firm has received back-to-back awards from the publication.  The firm was honored in 2009 for creating and growing the Holocaust Survivors Justice Network, the single largest coordinated pro bono legal effort in United States history.

The victory in McCloud has been widely covered in local and national media.  The NLJ’s full award-granting profile can be found here.
