Prevailing in furlough litigation for workers' compensation insurer

This case planted Manatt in a familiar place, right in the thick of current political events. As a result of California’s dire budget situation, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared mandatory furlough days and pay cuts for state employees. A number of lawsuits challenged the governor’s order, but only the one brought by Manatt, on behalf of the State Compensation Insurance Fund, succeeded. After two sets of briefings and two lengthy hearings in state court, the judge ruled that the furlough order does not apply to State Fund employees.
