During a radio broadcast, NPR interviewed Manatt's Nigel Wilkinson, a partner in the firm's Litigation practice, for insight into the potential legal consequences of over-imbibing at an office gathering.
"I do think, sometimes, employees forget that the office rules apply at an office party," said Wilkinson, who counsels clients on a variety of employment-related issues. He added that events that unfold at office parties can lead to litigious outcomes. "The most typical [are] sexual harassment claims," he said, "But the relaxed atmosphere can lead to racist jokes, or an employee can injure themselves or injure someone else . . . I've seen all of these."
