Manatt’s Emil Petrossian, a partner in the firm’s litigation practice, was named to the Daily Journal’s 2019 list of the top 40 lawyers under 40 in California.

In its profile of Petrossian, the publication notes that he litigates difficult, high-stakes disputes. Over the past year, this included his work as co-lead counsel representing the city of San Jose and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration in efforts to halt Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross and the Trump administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.

Petrossian and his team secured a favorable ruling in the Northern District of California earlier this year. Following a U.S. Supreme Court decision halting the question’s addition stemming from a similar proceeding in New York, the Trump administration dropped its efforts to include a citizenship question entirely.

“Trump’s pronouncement that he would not pursue the citizenship question put an end to it,” Petrossian told the Daily Journal. “But it does come off as a win. We knew Secretary Ross offered pretextual reasons for ulterior motives, but we could not foresee how things would unfold. This case was one of the highlights of my career so far.”

The publication also notes Petrossian’s role as lead counsel in a unique and complex copyright action on behalf of bestselling children’s book publisher, Timbuktu Labs Inc. The suit filed in the Central District of California seeks a judicial declaration that Timbuktu’s co-founder and former chief creative officer does not own any copyrights to the company’s works under the Copyright Act.
