TC Heartland Ruling Protects Startups From Patent Assertion

U.S. Supreme Court Puts New Limits on Patent Suits
– Intellectual Property Watch
Intellectual Property Watch interviewed Manatt’s Chris Broderick, a partner in the firm’s intellectual property practice, for an article on the Supreme Court’s decision in TC Heartland LLC v. Kraft Food Brands Group. The high court overturned long-established Federal Circuit law, restricted the power of patent owners and handed a defeat to so-called “patent trolls.”

The ruling can also be a lifesaver for fledging businesses. “The decision protects small tech startups across the country from a patent assertion that can shut down their business,” said Broderick.
