A Trump Immigration Rule Could Devastate Rural Hospitals

Manatt’s April Grady, a director with our Manatt Health team, was quoted by Talk Poverty in a piece about the Trump administration’s proposal for a “public charge” immigration rule.

As the proposed rule would impose on incoming immigrants an income requirement and a lack of dependency on government benefits, the publication noted relevant concerns, some of which include individuals unenrolling in Medicaid, an increased uninsured population and a loss of income for rural hospitals.

Grady mentioned that the rule declines to provide estimated fiscal and social impacts, saying, “There [are] administration hurdles that are not fully explored in the proposed rule.”
