Manatt’s Lindsay Conner, leader of the firm’s entertainment group, spoke with Bloomberg about the Chinese government’s involvement in the country’s film industry.
Bloomberg reports that tougher government censorship has affected ticket sales, and a recent tax evasion crackdown has made some investors reluctant to finance new films.
Conner said a recent drop in film production in China over the past year was the biggest contributor to the box-office decline.
“This was largely due to the tax issues that faced a number of Chinese companies and talent over the past year, and financial limitations on production capacity that resulted,” he said.
