Manatt’s Kenneth Kaufman, senior counsel in the firm’s Manatt Entertainment group, was mentioned in an article in Washington’s Top News on new works that have entered the public domain.

The publication noted that the 2008 Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act kept certain works from being added to the public domain as it extended the length of copyright from 75 to 95 years; as of the first day of 2019, new works have been added in the United States for the first time in 20 years.

Kaufman said that the public domain applies only in the United States and added that works may still be protected in other countries, so a creator still couldn’t exhibit a new “derivative work” overseas.
