Utah Appeals to Trump for Medicaid Expansion

The Hill
– Utah tests Trump on Medicaid expansion

Manatt’s Cindy Mann, a partner with Manatt Health, spoke to The Hill about Utah’s Medicaid program and the state’s request to the Trump administration for financial assistance in expanding the program.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a limited Medicaid expansion plan into law this week, defying constituents who in November approved a full expansion of the program. The Trump administration has never approved a request of this nature, but The Hill reports that state lawmakers are hoping they can get the approval and lead the way for other states.

Mann, who served as deputy administrator and director of the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services under the Obama administration, said applicants who joined the program last year could see immediate benefits if Utah gets the approval from the Trump administration for additional Medicaid funding.

“If they say yes to Utah, they will turn back and tell Arkansas and Massachusetts yes as well,” said Mann.
