China Opens Door for Foreign Movie Theater Chains, But Will They Enter?

Manatt’s Lindsay Conner, leader of the firm’s entertainment group, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the potential for foreign investment in the Chinese moviegoing audience.

China’s National Development and Reform Commission announced on June 30 that it had updated its “Negative List,” a government document outlining which industries cannot accept foreign investments, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Commission dropped a restriction on the entertainment industry that had stipulated that “the construction and operation of cinemas must be controlled by a Chinese party.”

Conner said it remains to be seen how foreign companies can capitalize on China’s exhibition sector.

“You certainly can’t say that companies going into theater construction in China now will be getting in on the ground floor,” he said.
