Phone Number Spoofing Used in Robocalls

Manatt’s Christine Reilly, chair of the firm’s TCPA compliance and class action defense practice, spoke to The Wall Street Journal about the role of number spoofing in robocalls.

Citing data from a call-blocking phone application, the publication examined figures that claimed that 8 billion robocalls were made to individuals in 2018’s last quarter, and noted that one tool that has been used is spoofing, which allows the caller to display a phone number that isn’t the one they’re calling from in order to make the call appear more legitimate.

“A lot of spoofing can happen overseas, and when it happens from overseas it can be very difficult to trace the origins of a call,” said Reilly.
