Overview

Manatt's civil trial and appellate group includes some of the top appellate lawyers in the United States. We believe creativity, judgment and experience are the keys to winning outcomes.

Our appellate lawyers have successfully handled cases in courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court, most of the federal courts of appeals, and many state high courts and intermediate appellate courts. A natural complement to our nationally recognized trial group, the appellate group also regularly handles appeals of cases tried by other firms.

We develop strategies with your business goals in mind.

In addition to our familiarity with the appellate process as it is practiced in multiple jurisdictions, our appellate lawyers work with our trial lawyers both before and after judgment to ensure that issues are properly set up for either attack or defense on appeal.

The cases handled by our appellate team run the gamut: from health care, intellectual property, land use and eminent domain, to entertainment, banking, insurance, employment and unfair competition.

Our appellate team lawyers also collaborate with our industry practices in the filing of amicus curiae briefs in cases involving issues of industrywide importance. Most often, these briefs are filed in either the U.S. Supreme Court or in state high courts, where policy counts heavily and where the stakes for individual clients can be quite high, with impacts that will last for years.

Clients across a full spectrum of industries rely on the effectiveness of our appellate advocacy to attack or defend trial court judgments. Often we are called upon to prepare petitions for extraordinary writs in an effort to obtain appellate review of trial court orders that are not otherwise appealable.

Our lawyers have been honored by membership in the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers and recognized by leading peer-review publications, including Best Lawyers in America.
