Serafi and Straw Quoted in InsuranceNewsNet on Health Coverage at the End of the PHE

– InsuranceNewsNet

Manatt Health Partner Kinda Serafi and Senior Advisor Tara Straw were quoted in InsuranceNewsNet on how the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) may impact health insurance coverage for Americans enrolled in Medicaid or Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage.

“The potential for coverage loss is really significant,” she said. With many renewals expected at the end of the PHE, the rate at which states can address the backlog of pending renewals will determine how significant the loss of coverage will be,” Serafi noted.

Furthermore, more than three million individuals receiving health insurance through the ACA exchange could lose their coverage if enhanced premium tax credits expire at the end of 2022. Whether the enhanced tax credits will continue after the end of this year “is very much up to Congress,” Straw said. “I don't have a prediction as far as the likelihood of that happening, but certainly it comes down to dollars and cents. Do they have the funding to maybe extend these subsidies or to make them permanent? Do they have the offsets? Who knows?”
