In his latest column for Daily Journal, Manatt Appellate Partner explored the unique attributes of the Ninth Circuit that distinguishes it from other federal courts.
Covering cases over a vast range of locations and currently having the largest number of judges are only a few characteristics which set the Ninth Circuit apart, according to the article. In addition to an expansive and extensively structured administration, other features include providing Ninth Circuit judges with a one-year “sabbatical” after seven years of service as well as having a Mission Statement and a comprehensive section for “Legal Guides” posted on their website. Shatz wrote, “The Ninth Circuit stands out among the federal courts of appeals as a vast and uniquely structured judicial galaxy—spanning immense geography, handling the largest caseload, and operating with distinct rules, administrative innovations, and judicial practices that set it apart from its sister circuits.”
