California's Role in the New Biden Administration

– Los Angeles Times

This article, published in the Los Angeles Times on January 17, 2021, highlights the role that California will play in the new Biden Administration. It describes the state as “the de facto policy think tank of the Biden-Harris administration,” much as we discussed during our "Talking Politics: California Goes to Washington" webinar, and highlights the surge of California officials heading to D.C. and the California-grown policy ideas heading east as well. These policies will include moves on “climate action, workers’ rights, law enforcement and criminal justice, healthcare and economic empowerment.” The article also notes two areas the new administration aims to tackle that have not been major successes for elected officials in California: increased protections for “gig” workers, which were recently defeated by Proposition 22 in November, and high-speed rail, which has been plagued with issues in California but remains dear to President Biden.
