10 Soft Skills Every GC Should Master
Manatt Health Partner wrote an article for Law360 discussing the top soft skills in-house counsel should develop that are the key to determining success.
In the article, Brown noted that developments like artificial intelligence are creating a fast-changing regulatory environment and transforming the way legal services are delivered. While it’s important for general counsel to maintain their specialized, technical and legal skills, Brown argued that soft skills will likely be the differentiator in these disruptive times. “Hard skills aren't the only prerequisite to becoming a great general counsel. Paying careful attention to how you show up for, and interact with, the key people in your organization, will be the true differentiator in perfecting your noble calling,” he wrote.
He offered 10 soft skills that every general counsel should develop:
- Show dispassion
- Nurture self-awareness
- Admit your mistakes
- Exhibit confidence, not certainty
- Remain curious
- Exhibit courage
- Be authentic
- Pick your battles
- Don’t take yourself too seriously
- Get a coach
