Manatt’s Robert Jacobs, co-chair of the firm’s entertainment, sports and media litigation practice, was interviewed by the Daily Journal about a lawsuit that Alfonso Ribeiro recently filed.
Ribeiro, well-known for playing Carlton Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, created a dance while on the show. The publication noted that Ribeiro filed a lawsuit against the video game “Fortnite” under choreographer’s copyright after the game used a dance he performed while on the show.
“Even though he may get residuals from the show, all services were likely rendered for the benefit of the producers or the studio,” said Jacobs. “In which case, he might not have standing to sue for copyright infringement.”
