CHIP Funding Delayed as Hill Focuses Elsewhere

Immigration, Spending Deal Dominate Busy Jan. on the Hill
– Law360

Manatt’s Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, a managing director with Manatt Health, was interviewed by Law360 for an article on where Congress’ attention is focused this month and how that impacts other programs awaiting funding.

Among those issues, the publication noted, are struggles with federal spending and immigration policy. As talks on these issues continue, it becomes harder to pass long-term legislation for the Children’s Health Insurance Program and foreign surveillance.

Brooks-LaSure explained that putting these issues on temporary extensions has real-world effects, as states currently cannot operate their child insurance programs on short-term funding. She noted that insurers in private markets are already dealing with the aftereffects of canceling cost-sharing reduction payments and need assistance in the form of reinsurance legislation.
