Manatt’s Bruce Gyory, a senior advisor in the firm’s government and regulatory practice, spoke to The Gotham Gazette about New York City’s upcoming special election for New York City Public Advocate.
Between 200,000 and 700,000 voters are expected to show up for the election, according to expert estimates. However, Gyory said he is doubtful that voter turnout will reach that higher turnout estimate.
He estimated a turnout of 300,000 voters and said that a number of factors will play into voter numbers, including “media coverage and individual candidates’ ability to drum up excitement about their campaign.” The election has “so little attention,” he noted, small details that may not play into a typical election hold the potential to upend the race.”
