Reilly Quoted in Law360 on Latest CPPA Enforcement Action Under the State’s Privacy Law
Manatt Privacy and Data Security Partner was quoted in an article by Law360 regarding the California Privacy Protection Agency’s (CPPA) recent enforcement actions against a U.S. automaker, what it signals about the agency’s view on what constitutes reasonable compliance, and how the near completion of its rulemaking policies and increased activity may produce more actions in the privacy law space.
According to the article, companies should consider taking steps to limit the amount of data they request from consumers in order to avoid similar regulatory scrutiny. Reilly commended this goal of having a unified approach for data requests, however, he noted that the challenge lies in the fact that not all rights are created equal under privacy laws. With rulemaking efforts winding down and the enforcement division ramping up its activities, Reilly believes it’s likely to lead to “more actions like this one that are designed to emphasize the core tenants of the California privacy law and do so in a way that's well-considered and methodical.”
