The article references the Black Sox scandal of 1919 for comparative purposes, particularly the banning for life from baseball of Shoeless Joe Jackson, who has the third highest batting average in the history of Major League Baseball. Coincidentally, the current Commissioner of Baseball, Rob Manfred, recently refused to lift this ban:
