Justin C. Johnson

Justin C. Johnson is a partner in Manatt’s Privacy and Data Security practice with nearly two decades of experience spanning complex litigation, data privacy and security, regulatory compliance and consumer protection. A seasoned commercial litigator and business executive, Justin has held multiple general counsel roles in addition to his experience advising and representing clients in high-stakes litigation and sophisticated regulatory and compliance matters.

On the litigation front, Justin has broad experience in federal and state courts from investigation through class certification, trial and appeal, defending a wide range of businesses in privacy, consumer protection cases and class actions. He has managed nationwide litigation portfolios involving emerging issues at the intersection of privacy and the First Amendment, including Right of Publicity Laws, the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), Daniel’s Laws, Automatic Renewal Laws, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Colorado Prevention of Telemarketing Fraud Act (PTFA).

On the compliance front, Justin led compliance initiatives and responses to state and federal regulatory inquiries and investigations and advised executive leadership teams and boards on risk management. He specifically helps clients develop compliance programs and navigate resulting regulatory inquiries and investigations in response to ever-evolving state comprehensive privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and data broker registration and deletion laws.

Previously, Justin was a litigation associate in Manatt’s Los Angeles office before becoming general counsel at a boutique real estate finance company and then co-founding a digital health startup. He most recently served as deputy general counsel of a privately owned company operating prominent consumer-facing subscription websites in the people search, social media and identity protection verticals.
