Seigel Quoted by Business Insider on Impacts of Abortion Prescription Monitoring Programs
Manatt Health Partner was quoted in a Business Insider article discussing the potential consequences prescription monitoring programs (PMP) could have on doctors and pharmacists providing medication abortion, especially in states seeking to restrict access to these services.
Recently, Louisiana passed a law mandating clinicians to log any prescription of the two most common abortion drugs, reclassifying them as “controlled substances”. As a result, clinicians are concerned they could be prosecuted for distributing these types of medications, according to Seigel.
Seigel also noted that doctors may hesitate to provide legal and medically necessary services out of fear that their prescription of these abortion drugs could be investigated. “One could imagine somebody coming in who's having a miscarriage — and this is appropriate for miscarriage management — and somebody saying, 'Well, wait, we have to wait a little longer to make sure you are really having a miscarriage,'” she said.
