Vital Access: How Policymakers Can Streamline the Cancer Care Journey

Over the past 50+ years, there has been enormous progress in understanding the mechanisms that cause blood cancer. As a result, new and groundbreaking treatments have led to significantly improved blood cancer survival rates. Too often, however, patients encounter roadblocks that prevent them from accessing the best care and, in some cases, benefiting from these medical advances. Numerous factors impact access, but a fragmented insurance system, including a patchwork of federal and state rules and policies, is a major contributor.

In a new webinar based on their upcoming report, Vital Access: How Policymakers Can Streamline the Cancer Care Journey, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Manatt Health will share nine key recommendations across five reform pathways for state and federal policymakers to consider as they work toward developing insurance regulations that advance a more equitable system of care. Each pathway addresses specific deficiencies in current insurance policy frameworks, and each is critical for ensuring a more equitable coverage landscape. The pathways the program will cover include:

  • Pathway 1: Addressing Burdens Posed by Inadequate Network Standards
  • Pathway 2: Eliminating Administrative Red Tape Barring Access to Treatment
  • Pathway 3: Reducing Administrative Hurdles of Seeking Out-of-State Care
  • Pathway 4: Increasing Transparency of Plan Network Composition and Performance
  • Pathway 5: Elevating Patient-Facing Support for Plan Selection and Navigation of Coverage and Treatment

Speakers:

  • Steve Butterfield, Director of State Policy, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  • Lucy Culp, Executive Director, State Government Affairs, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  • J. J. Duncan, Patient Advocate
  • Anne Karl, Partner, Manatt Health
  • Alex Morin, Director, Manatt Health
  • Donna O’Brien, National Advisor, Manatt Health
