Reece Quoted by Law360 on the Market for Collegiate Athlete Name, Image and Likeness

After Chaotic 2021, NCAA Faces Reckoning On Athlete Rights
– Law360

Manatt Digital and Technology Counsel and Director Matthew Reece was quoted in a Law360 article about how college athletes can now be paid for sponsorships and endorsements using their name, image and likeness (NIL) under a still-evolving system and what it means for both the NCAA and brands seeking to capitalize on this legislation.

Reece examined how this new market may develop, especially in light of the haphazard patchwork of rules and policies between states and schools which may create a new set of legal challenges. "It will be very interesting after this school year to take a look back and see what the deals already were," Reece said, to "match up the actual deal activity to the policies and see if there is a difference between similarly situated schools in a state with a name, image and likeness law and another that is in a state without a law."
